Motor and speech difficulties can hide understanding. Access to communication, sufficient response time and adapted materials are central to showing learning.
Key points to discuss:
- Set participation and communication goals alongside curriculum goals.
- Use eye gaze, partner-assisted choices, switches or other access methods consistently.
- Reduce unnecessary motor demands when assessing knowledge.
- Plan positioning, fatigue, sensory needs, seizures, personal care and safe eating/drinking.
- Give staff time and training to learn the person’s communication.
- Review plans with the family and multidisciplinary team as needs change.
