Wheelchair and seating reviews: a practical checklist

Seating affects comfort, breathing, eating, communication, skin health and participation. It should be reviewed when growth, scoliosis, tone, pain or function changes.

Key points to discuss:
- Check pelvis and trunk support, head position, foot support and pressure distribution.
- Test access to eye-gaze/AAC, trays, switches, feeding and social interaction.
- Look for redness, rubbing, heat, leaning, sliding or distress during and after use.
- Consider transport safety, transfers, carers’ handling and access around the home/school.
- Ask about alternative positions and opportunities to move out of the chair.
- Ensure the plan includes repairs, adjustments and a scheduled review.
