Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes gestures, objects, pictures, partner-assisted scanning, switches and speech-generating devices. A person may need several methods.
Key points to discuss:
- Ask for assessment in familiar activities and with familiar communication partners.
- Describe current ways the person accepts, refuses, chooses, greets, comments and seeks help.
- Check access method, motor and vision needs, vocabulary, portability and durability.
- Plan training for family, school, respite and healthcare staff—not only the AAC user.
- Agree who maintains vocabulary, charges equipment and arranges repairs.
- Request a low-tech backup and review the system as skills and needs change.
