Eye gaze can provide a way to make choices, comment, ask, refuse and participate. Assessment should look beyond a single test session because fatigue, seizures, lighting, positioning and unfamiliarity affect performance.
Key points to discuss:
- Start with motivating choices and reliable yes/no signals.
- Ask for joint assessment by speech and language therapy/AAC, occupational therapy and vision specialists where available.
- Optimise seating, screen position, calibration, symbol size and dwell time.
- Model communication throughout ordinary activities without turning every interaction into a test.
- Allow generous processing time and treat looking away as meaningful when appropriate.
- Keep a low-tech backup for illness, fatigue, outdoor use or equipment failure.
