Communication partner strategies that support participation

Post by admin »

Communication success depends on partners as well as technology. Small changes in pace and interaction can make a large difference.

Key points to discuss:
- Presume competence and speak directly to the person.
- Comment and model language as well as asking questions.
- Offer meaningful choices and pause long enough for a response.
- Acknowledge all communication—eye gaze, facial expression, body movement, sounds and symbols.
- Avoid repeated testing or prompting that removes the opportunity to initiate.
- Share successful signals and strategies across home, school and healthcare settings.
