When to ask for a sleep assessment

Post by admin »

Sleep disruption in Rett syndrome may relate to breathing, seizures, pain, reflux, constipation, anxiety, environment or the sleep–wake rhythm. Finding the cause matters before choosing treatment.

Key points to discuss:
- Ask for review when poor sleep is persistent, worsening or affecting safety, learning or family health.
- Mention snoring, gasping, pauses, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness and any suspected night seizures.
- Review pain, positioning, temperature, continence, feeding and constipation as possible contributors.
- Ask whether medication timing or side effects may be involved; do not change prescribed medicines without advice.
- A clinician may consider sleep medicine, respiratory/ENT review, overnight oximetry, EEG or polysomnography depending on the pattern.
